Heya guys, I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to keeping marines... well okay alot!! I just got my first fish and corals yesterday and in the excitement I thought I'd share some pictures with you. I don't know how to post here so I made an album on photobucket. It's still pretty sparse in there, but I've definitely got the bug now and can't wait till next pay day to buy some more!! s1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff396/Yorkshirekat/Marine%20Aquarium/

Heya Ian, The lights are 2x36 Watt & 2x24 Watt compact T5. I downsized from a 5ft tropical to 3ft marine as I wasn't confident keeping marine yet at that size. But I've had the tank set up since November and I'm thinking later on this year possibly early next I'm going to convert the old tropical tank to marine. Just need to find someone to drill it for me! :/ I got a 8 tube T5 lighting for that tank, so was thinking of just ordering marine tubes and replacing them. I'm thinking perhaps the best route might be to try hammer corals, favia or a fungia, duncans etc. Any advice offered is appreciated Katie

Hi Katie, With the lights you have at the moment you should get away with any one on your list but if you are thinking of jumping into keeping hard corals i would look at upgrading your lights to halides or if you are in a spending mood leds. Ref to the trops tank you are thinking of changing to later. Has it ever had any copper based treatments used in it to treat the tropical fish as this can be absorbed over time into the silicone, which then can leak out back into your salt water. ( Bad news for your corals as they do not like it at all ) Cheers Ian.

Hi Katie , Arent i the dipstick, i didnt read your message properly you have said you have a t5 light unit for the bigger tank. Well i would have a look at the kz bulbs from coral culture , their super blue and fugiai purple mixed with coral whites realy bring out the colours in your corals. This should support most hard corals even some types of montis and acros. Sorry again Ian.

Heya Ian,
I do like the look of hard corals but i don't think that's going to be for some time yet. I guess it's probably going to be safer to just new a tank by the sounds of it. I been looking at custom built ones from AC Aquatics. Wish i had gone with that first rather than on my tiny little 3ft. I've always wanted to keep marines but didn't think I'd ever be able to do it. Looking online at some of the larger tanks it's definitely the route i want to go. So I'll be saving my pennies and hopefully upgrading late summer. Thanks for the info about the bulbs. I wasn't sure what to go for.

Hello Katie. The one thing about keeping a reef system i find is you never stop learning. Happy to help. Any other questions just bang them on and one of us will try and help, between us all we should be able to give you the help needed . See you at the next meeting hopefully. Cheers Ian.

just picked up on saying went for 3ft tank i would have gone the other way using the 5ft as bigger systems are stable thus more forgiving, but nothing good ever happens in a marine tank quickly.
